Meet Dr. Brendan Sotomayor
Certified Plasmalogen and CIRS Physician
Dr. Brendan Sotomayor was born and raised in the Chicagoland suburbs, graduating from Carl Sandburg High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Physiology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Iowa. Drawn back to his hometown, he pursued his medical degree at Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine, where he embraced the institution’s mission to “treat the human spirit.” He subsequently matched into an emergency medicine residency at Resurrection Medical Center, completing his training in 2019.
Dr. Sotomayor began his career in Northwest Indiana, working in a high-volume emergency department and treating critically ill patients from underserved communities. Despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle, he experienced a decline in his own health early in his career. His search for answers led to a diagnosis of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), sparking a deep commitment to understanding and addressing this complex condition.

In 2021, Dr. Sotomayor relocated to the Driftless region of Wisconsin, practicing emergency medicine there. With a newfound awareness of CIRS, he recognized its widespread presence among patients and the critical need for specialized treatment. Determined to provide evidence-based care, he pursued proficiency in the Shoemaker Protocol and became a certified Proficiency Partner in the spring of 2022.

Driven by a passion to bridge this gap in medical care, Dr. Sotomayor founded Nuerth Medicine, a practice dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of CIRS. Through his work, he continues to advocate for patient-centered, science-backed approaches to chronic inflammatory illness, striving to improve the lives of those affected by this often-overlooked condition.

What is Nuerth Medicine?
Nuerth (new· earth) Medicine offers a unique personalized approach to healthcare. We understand the importance of every patient’s story and each of their unique circumstances that affect their medical journey. We concentrate in treating patients with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) and related illness using peer reviewed published literature and the Shoemaker protocol. In addition, we also offer plasmalogen therapy and have expanded our clinic to see and care for many neurodegenerative diseases that commonly overlap with underlying innate immune system dysfunction seen in chronic inflammatory response syndrome. Here at Nuerth Medicine, we utilize precision and integrative approaches to medicine in order to provide cutting edge medical care that works.
How do you know if you might have CIRS/mold illness?
The prevalence of CIRS is quite high. About 22-24% of the population has the genetic susceptibility to develop this condition and it often presents with a multisystem, multisymptom illness. Many patients have been misdiagnosed with a multitude of different illness, when in reality, their root cause illness is actually CIRS.
If you have been told you have:
Dementia, parkinsons, multiple sclerosis, ALS, cognitive decline, concussion, TBI, tremor, other neurodegenerative disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, lyme disease, chronic lyme disease, post-covid syndrome (covid long-haulers syndrome), vaccine injury, ADD, ADHD, depression, anxiety, suicidality, rageful episodes, other psychiatric disorders, insomnia, postural orthostatic tachycardic syndrome (POTS disease), adrenal fatigue, IBS, mast cell activation syndrome, systemic exertion intolerance disease, multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic migraines, pulmonary hypertension, etc
Then, you may have CIRS.
